Next-Level Marine Pilot Simulation

The Pilotage Centre for Training And Research (PSTAR) is the premier marine pilot training facility and simulation analysis centre on the west coast. Out multi-bridge simulator is used to train marine pilots at various stages of their career, from apprentices to regular refresher training for senior pilots.

Simulating Reality

PSTAR uses high-definition ship and tug models, built and validated to match real-world performance and capabilities. We also use high-fidelity 3D geographical area models (including sub-surface bathymetric contours, spot soundings, terrain elevation, coast line and man-made structures) to ensure visual scenery is an accurate representation of the environment. Tidal conditions are modelled to a fine-detail grid consisting of discrete stratified layers from the water’s surface to about 20m deep, with each data node including current direction and velocity values at various vertical levels. These come together to provided a highly realistic visual and physical representation of the environment, ensuring all training is as realistic as possible.

The key to credible, successful simulations is high-detail inputs.

Full Bridge. Full Control.

The simulator uses a Kongsberg-built special purpose ship bridge simulator that adheres to DNV Class B notation. Marine pilots manoeuvre the ship from a simulated deep-sea ship bridge with a 360° field of view equipped with modern instruments. Two additional ship bridges with 250° fields of view and all of the requisite hardware controls and instruments are generally used to simulate escort or berthing tugs, operated by masters from local tug companies. A NAVSIM® Portable Pilot Unit (the same carry-aboard independent chart information system used by Pilots out on the water) is connected via Bluetooth to feed positional data for the vessel and Automated Identification System (AIS) feeds for the assisting tugs.

PSTAR is a 50/50 joint venture between the Pacific Pilotage Authority (PPA) and the British Columbia Coast Pilots (BCCP), with the vision of training to piloting excellence.
